The underlying theme of this newstudy is the communists' attempt to mould the region's varied economic, social, intellectual and cultural characteristics according to the model of the Soviet Union.

Ben Fowkes was a history professor at Sheffield and North London University. He conducted archival research in Vienna, Bonn, Prague, and Moscow, as well as writing several publications, including Communism in Germany During the Weimar Republic. Karl Marx: The Economic Manuscript of 1863-1865 (Capital, Book Three) and Henryk Grossman: Collected Writings (edited by Professor Rick Kuhn) are two translations he did. Brill will publish both books.
