John Watt was born in 1936 in Perth, Western Australia, and grew up there. He attended Catholic schools and spent two and a half years in the local seminary before going to the University of Western Australia to study Arts. He returned to finish a PhD in philosophy at the Australian National University after a few years teaching in high schools, and then went on to lecture at Monash and Murdoch Universities. He now lives in Busselton, south of Perth, with his wife, Lesley, where he continues his musical and writing hobbies.
