He is the editor of the Journal of Asian Studies, the advising editor for China at the Los Angeles Review of Books and contributes regularly to publications including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and Time magazine. He currently serves as Chancellor's Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine.
