In May 1905 Albert Einstein published his theory of relativity, changing time forever. This work gives an account of the quest to synchronize time that culminated in Einstein's revolutionary theory of relativity. It also culls unexplored archives and unearthed forgotten patents to tell how Henri Poincare grappled with a similar issue.

Peter Galison was educated at Cambridge and Harvard universities. He is currently the Mallinckrodt Professor of History of Science and of Physics at Harvard.
