Elegant Spirits: Amano's Tale of Genji and Fairies by Yoshitaka Amano

Yoshitaka Amano has visualised other worlds of wonder as the artist of the Final Fantasy game series. Now, with Elegant Spirits, our own world's ancient treasures of literature and legend are richly evoked through Amano's paintings and illustrations!

Yoshitaka Amano was born in 1952 in Shizuoka, Japan, to a WWII soldier and a traditional Japanese lacquer ware artist. At the age of 15, Amano became the youngest person to be employed by iconic anime studio Tatsunoko, where he worked on the popular anime series Speed Racer. The cast of Gatchaman, also known as Battle of the Planets, was conceived by Amano in the 1970s, and superstar comics painter and Gatchaman enthusiast Alex Ross (Kingdom Come) has stated of them, They belong in the pantheon of great characters. Amano created the cast of Genesis Climber Mospeada, the third installment of the Robotech (Robotech: The New Generation) television series, in the 1980s. Throughout 1985, Amano collaborated on the feature-length The Angel's Egg with director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) and Hayao Miyazaki's early producer Hideo Ogata, which is frequently regarded as the most personal of Oshii's anime films. In the 1980s, Amano established himself as one of Japan's most sought-after character and design artists, painting hundreds of science fiction and fantasy characters.

His intriguing, atmospheric style drew the attention of the makers of a new video game concept called Final Fantasy in 1987, who engaged Amano to give the game a distinct creative vision. In 1997, he debuted in the New York art scene with the exhibit Think Like Amano, and the following year, he collaborated on the animated concert film 1001 Nights with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Amano's New York exhibit led to his first work in American comics, when he was requested to produce a poster for the 10th anniversary of Sandman, a project that introduced him to Neil Gaiman, with whom he would cooperate on Sandman: The Dream Hunters; for Marvel, he would create Elektra & Wolverine: The Redeemer with Greg Rucka.

Yoshitaka Amano's debut original novel, Deva Zan, with dozens of accompanying artworks, was published in 2013 by Dark Horse Comics, which has published over 40 books drawn by Amano. Via its English publication of Florent Gorges' Yoshitaka Amano: Beyond the Fantasy--The Illustrated Biography, Dark Horse is happy to celebrate one of the world's most influential Japanese artists.
