The Enchanted Landscape by Wynn Bullock

This collection of photographs and writings by the American photographer Wynn Bullock, acts as a celebration of his life and work. In addition to 90 of his best known, as well as more rarely seen photographs, this volume includes excerpts from private papers in which the photographer expounds his views on art, nature and human existence. There is also a poem by Ursula Le Guin, inspired by Bullock's photograph of a child in a forest, and a biographical essay, The Enchanted Landscape. Wynn Bullock was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1902. A brief, but acclaimed, career as a concert vocalist in the late 20s took him to Europe, where he discovered the work of the impressionist and post-impressionist painters. Upon finding that he shared their interest in light and alternative modes of representation of natural and human forms, he abandoned singing and devoted himself to photography for the rest of his life. His photographs are now in the permanent collections of over 80 museums and galleries worldwide. Bullock's portraits of such friends as Robinson Jeffers, Henry Miller and Edward Weston reflect his interaction with some of the foremost artists and thinkers of the century.
