Enumerative Combinatorics: Volume 1 by Richard P Stanley
This book is the first of a two-volume basic introduction to enumerative combinatorics at a level suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians. It concentrates on the theory and application of generating functions, a fundamental tool in enumerative combinatorics. The book covers those parts of enumerative combinatorics of greatest applicability to other areas of mathematics. The four chapters are devoted to an introduction to enumeration (suitable for advanced undergraduates), sieve methods (including the Principle of Inclusion-Exclusion), partially ordered sets, and rational generating functions. There are a large number of exercises, almost all with solutions, which greatly augment the text and provide entry into many areas not covered directly. Graduate students and research mathematicians who wish to apply combinatorics to their work will find this an authoritative reference.-

'This book is already a classic … a most instructive text, which is sheer delight to read and study. I am looking forward to the publication of the long awaited Enumerative Combinatorics, Vol. II.' C. Krattenthaler
Richard Stanley grew up in a low-income neighborhood of South San Diego. He earned a business degree as a serial entrepreneur-in-bank robbery while being a high school dropout. He was generously accepted into an institution of higher education managed by the California state prison system to further his studies in the criminal justice profession with a full-ride scholarship for no less than seven years, out of a possible eight, as a reward for his efforts in the banking industry. He concentrated in a hustling course and received an informal degree in purchasing life's needs and wilderness survival abilities during his time at the Donovan campus. For his efforts, he was given a sort of sabbatical, with seven months of personal time in seclusion for introspection and simply appreciating life.
He was cut off from the rest of the world, with no access to cell phones, laptops, or even eating utensils at times. Despite Stanley's initial refusal to participate in the retreat, the school insisted that he spend time in a distant area on campus. Stanley found it difficult to get work in any profession after leaving his educational institution because most firms would not acknowledge his higher education degree. He subsequently became an ironworker until an ailment forced him to retire.
He devised more conventional ways to hustle using his entrepreneurial abilities and unique state-funded education, and he now serves as a consultant to corporate leaders in the adult marketing field, as well as co-owner of the online classified website freevurse.com. He's also become a day trader in Bitcoin and Litecoin since he promised himself he'd never rob a bank again, and now that he has cryptocurrencies, he won't need one. Stanley, his fiancée, and her daughter live in Newport Beach, California. He likes the best weed and the best red wine from Southern California.
