Escape from Pompeii by Christina Balit

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 meant death for most of the Roman citizens living in Pompeii. But some people must have survived - and Christina Balit has used this as the startingpoint for her story. It tells of Tranio, an actor's son, and his friend Livia, the baker's daughter, who witness one of the most terrifying moments in recorded history - the destruction of their beloved city
Christina Balit 's first book for Frances Lincoln, Michael Morpurgo's Blodin the Beast, was shortlisted for the 1995 Kate Greenaway Medal; Ishtar and Tammuz was Commended for the 1996 Kate Greenaway Medal; and in 1997 The Twelve Labours of Hercules received a Kate Greenaway nomination. Her next book, Jacqueline Mitton's Zoo in the Sky, was followed by Kingdom of the Sun, winner of the 2002 English Association Award. Christina is both author and illustrator of Atlantis: The Legend of a Lost City, nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1999.
