Europe Since 1870 by James Joll
This is an incredibly detailed account of the development of Europe since 1870. Joll moves from one country to another in the space of a few lines, making detailed comparisons along the way, paying attention to intellectual and social trends as well as political developments.
James Joll (1918-1994) taught politics at both the University of Oxford and the University of London, becoming the Emeritus Professor of the University of London in 1981. An expert on anarchism and socialism, his other books include The Origins of the First World War and The Second International: 1889-1914.
