Exploring Chemical Analysis by Daniel C Harris

This book explores some of the complex ethical quandaries entailed by proposed phase I HIV preventive vaccine trials. The book argues that such trials must be initiated as soon as politically and ethically feasible on the one hand, and that no such trials should be undertaken until we can assure full compliance with the Nuremberg Code and the WHO/CIOMS International Ethical Guidelines for Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects on the other. The tension between these two positions is fully detailed and suggestions offered for how to think about possible resolutions.

Dan Harris was born in 1948 in Brooklyn, New York. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from MIT in 1968 and Caltech in 1973, respectively, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher at New York's Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He transferred to the Navy Air Systems Command in China Lake, California, where he is now a Senior Scientist & Esteemed Fellow, after teaching at the University of California at Davis from 1975 to 1980 and Franklin and Marshall College from 1980 to 1983. He wrote his lectures in bound form for his pupils while teaching analytical chemistry at Davis. Publishers' representatives passing through the college bookstore were drawn to this collection.

In 1982, the first edition of Quantitative Chemical Analysis was released. Exploring Chemical Analysis was published for the first time in 1996. Both have been revised on a regular basis. Dan is also the co-author of Symmetry and Spectroscopy, which was first published by Oxford University Publishing in 1978 and is now published by Dover Press.

SPIE Press released his book Materials for Infrared Windows and Domes in 1999. Sally, Dan's wife, and he married in 1970. They are the parents of two children and the grandparents of four grandkids. Sally's contribution to the quality and correctness of each version of the books is crucial.
