The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers Compendium by Gilbert Shelton

The definitive underground comic strips. Published in 15 languages and with worldwide sales of over 40 million copies along with countless items of merchandise. The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers are timeless clowns; it's the traditional, simple, basic forms of humour at the heart of these tripped-out cartoons - from slapstick to silly punchlines and Shelton's mastery of satire - which have kept them fresh and mirthful for 40 years. Collected here, a short selection of classic strips to serve as the perfect introduction to Gilbert Shelton's famous work.

Gilbert Shelton was born in the year 1940 in Dallas, Texas. He became the editor of The Texas Ranger, a student publication at the University of Texas in Austin. This would be Shelton's final serious job. Shelton founded The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers in 1967, after contributing to several underground comix with his first character, Wonder Wart-Hog, and drawing posters for rock concerts. In 1969, he and other Texas pals came to San Francisco to start Rip Off Press, from which the Freak Brothers comics were quickly syndicated and borrowed (or stolen!) by a slew of underground American newspapers and publications.

The first collection was released in 1971, and thirteen more Freak Brothers adventures have since been released. Fat Freddy's Cat, the world's most famous feline, began as a sidebar to the Freak Brothers' strip but has since evolved into its own - and highly profitable - entity. Shelton introduced new characters in 1993, the world's least successful rock band, Not Quite Dead, who have subsequently starred in their own series of comics. The Freak Brothers are still going strong 50 years later, despite the fact that many cults from the 1960s have withered away.

They are available in 15 languages and have sold over 40 million copies worldwide, as well as millions of items of goods such as T-shirts, postcards, badges, posters, and more. Shelton, his wife, and three cats currently reside in Paris, France.
