Families by Ann Morris

Some children live with their mothers and fathers. Others have stepparents or live with just one parent. Still others live with grandparents or foster parents who chose them specially. But all children all around the world, are part of families--big and small, loving, sharing, and caring for one another.

This look at all kinds of families from all over the world helps young children begin to think about families they belong to, as it gives them a glimpse into the rich variety of world cultures.

Family, Bread, Bread, Hats, Hats, On the Move, and Loving are just a few of Ann Morris's many novels. She currently resides in New York City. Ann Morris has been able to successfully merge her different expertise in teaching young children, travel, writing, and editing as a children's book writer. She developed a keen interest in cultures other than her own after growing up in the polyglot public schools of New York City, where each child's ethnic history was disclosed by his name or the contents of the lunch box from home filled with sausages, egg rolls, matzos, or pizza. She claims, I'm a nomad by nature.

She and photographer Ken Heyman once traveled across the United States to photograph the lives of various families. The snake charmer/teacher who taught class in a circus trailer while wearing her beloved boa around her neck was popular with both her and the teacher's students. Morris has taught children in public and private schools in New York City, as well as adults at Bank Street College, Columbia Teachers College, New York University, and Queens College of the City University of New York, however she has never attempted this trick herself. Ann Morris quit teaching to become the editorial director of Scholastic's early childhood section, and she has recently been teaching writing for children at The New School.

She now spends her professional time writing and the rest of her time observing 11 people, listening to music in all forms, caring for cats, cooking and eating, and traveling. Morris was caught up in the enchantment of the region as well as the problems that are a result of its history in Israel, according to her. When Will They Stop Fighting? is one of her books. Since then, the author-photographer combination has collaborated on other volumes for Lothrop, including Hats, Hats, Hats, Shoes, Shoes, and Bread, Bread, Bread, all part of a multicultural series.

Her passion for travel and the arts led her to the prestigious Vaganova Ballet Academy, where the offspring of the renowned Kirov dance company are trained. On Their Toes (Atheneum) was the outcome, followed by Dancing to America (Dutton), both taken by Paul Kolnik. The second book is about a Russian youngster and his family who immigrated to New York, where he now performs at our own School of American Ballet. Her book Karate Boy (Dutton) depicts her nephew and his karate classmates.

Because it was photographed by her cousin, David Katzenstein, she considers it a family book. The book Light the Flame, Bang the Drum (Dutton) is about holidays all across the world, with drawings by Peter Linenthal.
