Feminine Endings by Vernon Scannell
A novel set at Crackenthorpe Hall, a creative-writing centre in the North of England. A group of would-be poets of various ages, sexes and backgrounds arrive there to spend a week under the tutelage of two established poets. Some of the students are present for bizarre reasons unconnected with the art of poetry.
Vernon Scannell was born in 1922, served in the Gordon Highlanders in World War Two and was a professional boxer and a teacher before becoming a full-time writer in the 1960s. He has published novels, criticism, four autobiographical prose books and over a dozen books of poetry. He has received the Heinemann Award, the Cholmondeley Poetry Prize and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
