R. STEPHEN Western Woods (Knopf) and A Field Guide to the Grand Canyon (The Mountaineers Books) are two of WHITNEY's natural history works. He was the managing editor of the Sierra Club Bulletin, which is now Sierra, as well as an associate editor of The Mother Earth News and a contributing editor of Backpacker magazine. He also spent six years as the editorial manager of The Mountaineers Books. He and his wife live by a wonderful river a few miles outside of Seattle, where he has lived since 1978.
