The First of May by Brendan Mclaughlin

Rooted deeply in Glasgow's rich culture, The First of May, branches into myriad topics that cast a harrowing shadow upon contemporary life. A powerful memoir that is irrevocably certain to sow seeds of riveting discussion about coming of age, socialism, and the importance of the arts, politics, and people.
Brendan McLaughlin was the owner of The Scotia and Clutha Vaults: two pubs that have been focal points of Glasgow's music and literary scene from the latter part of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Glasgow, he worked as a social worker and served some of the most deprived Scottish communities before eventually turning to pub ownership and the arts, specifically music and literature. A self-proclaimed 'Scotialist', he became active in 'Worker's City,' a political group representing Glasgow's working classes. The pubs he owned have functioned as vessels of creative cultural output and community hubs dedicated to developing the city with goals for positive social change. Now, after several folkloric music albums, Brendan's contribution is concluding with an in-depth look at stories from his life, alongside an unflinching social commentary on the city itself. Brendan died in July 2022, but was determined that his book be published as a memorial of his life.
