The Five Foundations of SMSFs by Matthew Burgess
In recent years, the need for effective structuring of retirement savings has been brought into sharp focus for private investors and business owners alike. The combination of fundamental changes to the taxation regime, the vast amounts of wealth accumulated within superannuation funds, the perceived lack of value delivered by industry funds and the increasing tendency for both business and personal relationships to be relatively short term (as opposed to lifelong) have meant that traditional approaches to superannuation have been revolutionised. In this context, the use of SMSFs has become ubiquitous. The range of fundamental issues that need to be considered in relation to establishing and successfully maintaining an SMSF is vast. This book analyses the five foundations of SMSFs, in the following order: (a) overview of the fundamental aspects of SMSFs; (b) analysis of the main SMSF investment structures, including use of borrowing; (c) estate planning and asset protection; (d) death benefit nominations, and; (e) key cases.Matthew Burgess is one of the four founders and directors of Vision Legal, a specialty firm. He is particularly enthusiastic about the possibility to assist clients in achieving their objectives. Matthew has developed a number of game-changing models in collaboration with trusted advisors (whether accountants, financial advisers, or other lawyers) and their clients. Finding ways to fundamentally increase the value obtained by those advisers, and hence their clients, has lead him to create a number of game-changing models. Providing guaranteed upfront fixed pricing, launching Australia's first virtual law company, and, most recently, developing a platform that provides advisers with market-leading advice and support for less than $1 per week are just a few examples. Matthew has been recognized by most key industry organisations for his expertise in tax, structuring, asset protection, estate and succession planning, including the Tax Institute, the Weekly Tax Bulletin, and the 2014 'Best Lawyers' list for trusts and estates.
Employment is one area of Matthew's life that he enjoys, so there's no need for him to continuously seek 'balance.' Other major passions of his include: 1. Family - they are featured in a number of ways in the series of children's books he has written under the alias 'Lily Burgess' - see www.wordsfromdaddysmouth.com.au and several TV ads; 2. Learning - in late 2005, Matthew went cold turkey on television and most forms of media, significantly increasing his ability to study great literature and inspiring him to publish a book that investigates the concept of 'real success' - see www.thedreamenabler.com.au 3.
Other from being a gourmand and swimming at least 5km every week, Matthew built a stand-up workstation in 2007 and it altered his life, along with a few other lifestyle decisions.
