Flax and Linen by Patricia Baines
A compact, pocket history of the use and production of flax for textile making. Flax has been cultivated for thousands of years to produce the fibre to make linen. This book gives an account of the processes and tools involved in the production of linen from flax. The traditional methods, when the work was done by hand, are described, as well as some of the improvements and machines that have been developed.
Patricia Baines worked as a writer and researcher and had a special interest in the history of spinning wheels. As well as lecturing widely on the subject, she also wrote Linen: Hand Spinning and Weaving and Spinning Wheels, Spinners and Spinning, for which she was awarded the Craft Council Prize.
