Formative Britain presents an account of the peoples occupying the island of Britain between 400 and 1100 AD, whose ideas continue to set the political agenda today. Martin Carver is Professor of Archaeology at the University of York and was director of excavations at Sutton Hoo from 1983 to 1997. He is currently directing a new archaeological project in pursuit of the Dark Age kingdom of the northern Picts.
