Mary Wollstonecraft (Godwin) Shelley released her book Frankenstein in 1818. The monster becomes furious and tries to end Victor's life after being abandoned by its creator and despised by society. As one of the first works of science fiction addressing the moral consequences of scientific progress, Shelley's book was revolutionary for its day. It also questioned conventional gender norms since Shelley was a woman who wrote in a profession that was mostly male.
