Freedom by Joy Hakim

This volume focuses on the history of the United States through stories of human freedom aspired to and won, beginning with the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and culminating in the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 60s and the advances that have been made since. The book provides a picture of the people and events that shaped America. Joy Hakim's thesis is that despite all of the mistakes and tragic setbacks, freedom survives again and again.

Joy Hakim is a former newspaper writer and editor and elementary school teacher who holds a bachelor's degree in government from Smith College and a master's degree in education from Goucher College. Ms. Hakim has worked continuously with teachers and students in test classrooms all over the country to make each book in the History of US series the best it can be.
