Frommer's Newfoundland and Labrador by Andrew Hempstead
A fascinating history, a vibrant contemporary culture, the friendliest people, and an untamed wild. Newfoundland & Labrador is an incredible vacation destination, boasting two UNESCO World Heritage Sites; the only authentic Viking settlement in North America; the rugged beauty of the Atlantic coastline; and the historic city of St. John's, offering shopping, amazing seafood, and lively nightlife. Along Newfoundland & Labrador's 10,000-mile coastline, humpback whales migrate northwards while 10,000-year-old icebergs drift south. Newfoundland is also home to some of the world's most accessible seabird colonies, with more than 35 million gathering each year. Outdoor adventurers can walk or hike the beautiful East Coast Trail, stopping at Cape Spear, the easternmost point in North America. And for culture mavens, music and art festivals abound. Frommer's Newfoundland & Labrador covers each of the province's regions in detail, offering more information than any other major guide. It provides readers with all they need to plan an unforgettable vacation, from the best place to eat Jigg's Dinner (and information on exactly what that is) and catch some lively traditional music, to the best whale- and puffin-watching tours and perfect camping sites.
As a fulltime travel writer and photographer, Andrew Hempstead has spent many years exploring, photographing, and writing about Canada. He looks forward to spending every second summer at home in the Canadian Rockies, traveling mountain highways and hiking trails, exploring new places, and updating old favorites. He spends as much time as possible on the road, traveling incognito, experiencing the many and varied delights of the region just as his readers do. The result is the book you hold in front of you, the most comprehensive and up-to-date source of information available for traveling in the Canadian Rockies. Andrew has been writing since the late 1980s, when he left an established career in advertising and took off for Alaska, linking up with veteran travel writer Deke Castleman to research and update the fourth edition of the Moon Handbook to Alaska and the Yukon. Since then, he has produced guidebooks to British Columbia, Vancouver and Victoria, Alberta, Western Canada, Atlantic Canada, and Nova Scotia. He is also the author of Moon guidebooks to Australia and New Zealand, and a contributor to Moon San Juan Islands, Road Trip USA, Northwest Best Places, and Eyewitness Guide to the USA, as well as the updater of The Illustrated Guide to New Zealand. His writing and photographs have appeared in a wide variety of other media, including National Geographic Traveler, Travesias, Where, Interval World, Microsoft's Automap, and on the Alaska Airlines and Expedia websites. Andrew has spoken on guidebook writing to a national audience, has contributed to a university-level travel writing textbook, and has been called on by CNN Travel as a Canadian travel expert. Andrew lives with his wife and two children in Banff, Canada.
