Cothran (1941-2012) was a landscape architect, urban planner, and garden historian who worked in the field. He received degrees in ornamental horticulture, landscape architecture, and city planning from Clemson University, the University of Georgia, and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Cothran offered graduate classes on America's historic gardens and landscapes as an adjunct professor at both the University of Georgia and Georgia State University. Cothran was a member of the Southern Garden History Society, the Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation, Trees Atlanta, and the Cherokee Garden Library, Center for the Study of Southern Garden History, and served on the boards of the Southern Garden History Society, the Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation, Trees Atlanta, and the Cherokee Garden Library, Center for the Study of Southern Garden History. Cothran was a regular lecturer on southern garden history and was a member of a number of professional organizations.
