Gilgit Rebellion: The Major Who Mutinied Over Partition of India by William Brown

Remarkable account of how one young officer changed the course of history. Without Major Brown's initiative Gilgit would have gone to India rather than Pakistan with huge ramifications for the region. Rare first hand experiences of life in an outpost of the Empire in the 1940s.
Born in Scotland in 1922, Brown's military career is covered in this book. He remained in India and Pakistan after leaving the Army and married Margaret. They returned to the Borders in 1959. He died in 1984 but his widow is very much alive and lives in North London.
