For almost 30 years, Gary Rockswold has taught mathematics, computer science, and physical science to students at all levels, including high school, undergraduate, and graduate. He graduated from St. John's University with a bachelor's degree. His Ph.D. is from St. Olaf College. Iowa State University awarded him a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics. He is an emeritus professor of mathematics at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and a key investigator of parallel computing at the Minnesota Supercomputer Institute.

He is a published author who has written a number of mathematics textbooks for Pearson Education, both for developmental and collegiate students. His goal in writing is to make mathematics more accessible to a wider range of students by presenting it in a setting that is important to them.
