Grass Soup by Hsien-Liang Chang

Now one of China's major literary figures, Zhang Xianling spent twenty-two years of his life in Mao's labour reform camps. In 1960, two years into his imprisonment, he began to keep a diary, the sole tangible record of his existence. Grass Soup deciphers the cryptic entries in that remarkable document, miraculously presevred from destruction and returned to its author in 1979.
Zhang Xianling, born in 1936, is the author of the internationally acclaimed Half of Man is Woman and Getting Used to Dying. In 1993 he set up a trading company in Ningxia to assist the local community in developing a market economy. He is vastly encourgaed that floppy disks are now being manufactured near open spaces where he spent years tending the labour camp's livestock. Martha Avery translates for Zhang Xianling. Involved in print publishing in China and Japan for many years, she is now working in the field of electronic publishing in Seattle.
