The Great Escape by Anton Gill
Stalag Luft III was a specially built German prison camp designed to hold the most determined escapers - officers and men from the RAF. Their spectacularly daring escape plan was on an awe-inspiring scale: 650 prisoners working for an entire year to build the longest and most sophisticated tunnel under a POW camp. The tragic end, with 50 captured prisoners shot in cold blood on Hitler's personal orders, led to its own war crimes prosecution and executions. The last surviving escapers, along with the original executioners have been tracked down and dramatically tell the full story in this volume.
It is the duty of every serious war historian to add this book to their collection- The Press & Journal, AberdeenA conscientious revision of a venture that deserves our deep respect and continuing attention - The Scotsman'Resounds with authenticity...a wonderful tale' Earl Spencer, Mail on Sunday 'Gill has done an excellent job of working this complex material into a readable story...with intriguing new information' Frank McLynn, Glasgow Herald
