Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) was born in Edinburgh. He suffered from tuberculosis from an early age and spent most of his life traveling before his early death in Samoa at age forty-four. Over the course of his short life, he produced some of the most popular and important works of nineteenth century English fiction, such as Treasure Island and Kidnapped, that have endured in contemporary popular mythology today.
