Edith Hamilton (1868-1963) was born in Dresden, Germany, to American parents and raised in Indiana. She was the headmistress of Baltimore's Bryn Mawr School for the first part of the twentieth century. After retirement, she began writing on ancient civilizations and quickly acquired international acclaim as a classicist. Mythology, The Greek Way, The Roman Way, and The Echo of Greece are among her best-selling novels. She considered the event at which King Paul of Greece declared her an honorary citizen of Athens in 1957 to be the pinnacle of her life.
