The Hanging of Thomas Jeremiah by J William Harris
In 1775, Thomas Jeremiah was one of fewer than 500 'Free Negros' in South Carolina. He was falsely accused by whites of sowing insurrection among slaves at the behest of the British. Lord William Campbell, royal governor of the colony, who believed the accusation was unjust, tried to save Jeremiah's life but failed. This book tells his story.
J. William Harris is professor of history at the University of New Hampshire. He is the author of The Making of the American South: A Short History, 1500-1877; Deep Souths: Delta, Piedmont and Sea Island Society in the Age of Segregation (finalist for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize in history); and Plain Folk and Gentry in a Slave Society: White Liberty and Black Slavery in Augusta's Hinterlands.
