Haywire by George Bilgere
Haywire was chosen for the Swenson Award by poet Edward Field, winner of numerous awards and a personal friend of the late May Swenson. Field describes the book this way. "This poet, you knew from his very first lines, didn't fall for anything phony--his own language is irresistibly no-bullshit down to earth, even sassy."
Haywire (winner of the May Swenson Poetry Prize in 2006) and The Good Kiss, chosen by former U.S. President George W. Bush, are two of George Bilgere's most recent publications. Billy Collins, the Poet Laureate, was named the recipient of the University of Akron Poetry Award in 2001. The National Endowment for the Arts, the Fulbright Foundation, the Society of Midland Writers, the Ohio Arts Council, and the Witter Bynner Foundation have all given Bilgere grants, fellowships, and prizes. He was awarded the Pushcart Award in 2009. Bilgere is a professor at Cleveland's John Carroll University.
