Haywire by James Mills

To former DEA agent Doug Fleming, it is the deal of a lifetime. Carry 100 million dollars in bearer bonds from Caracas to New York as a small favour for an old contact and get the change to rebuild your life. But things never go the way they should.

For more than a decade, James Mills has been writing about the history of drugs. The Wellcome Trust, the AHRC, and the British Academy have all supported his research, and this book is essentially the result of ESRC grants. Madness, Cannabis, and Colonialism: The 'native-only' lunatic asylums of British India, 1857-1900 (2000) and Cannabis Britannica: Empire, Trade, and Prohibition, 1800-1928 (2003) are two of his previous writings. The latter was named to the panel's 'highly commended' list for the History Today Book of the Year Award.
