Heidi by Johanna Spyri

A young girl's idyllic mountain life in the Swiss Alps Heidi is only five when she goes to live with her grandfather in his hut in the Swiss Alps. Up in the high pastures, she befriends the goatherd Peter and delights in the company of the gentle goats. Everyone is sad when Heidi is taken away to live with a family in Frankfurt. But Heidi's courage and good spirit charm all who meet her. Soon she is able to return to her beloved mountains, sharing her happiness, health and home with all her new-found friends. Heidi was first published in 1880. A classic tale of childhood joys and friendships, it has delighted and inspired generations of children.
Johanna Spyri (1827-1901) was born in Switzerland in a village overlooking Lake Zurich. Very little is known of her life, although she became the author of almost fifty novels. Heidi was originally published in 1880 as Heidi's Years of Wandering and Learning. It was so successful that a sequel followed the next year - it too was an immediate bestseller and the two books were combined into a single volume. The story was translated into English within a few years. It quickly became, and remains, her most popular book. Angelo Rinaldi gained immediate success with his first picture book Old Hush Wing written by Alan Brown HarperCollins), which was nominated for two prestigious awards - the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Mother Goose Award. Since then he has been building a strong reputation for his beautiful picture books, and his covers for both adult and children's titles.
