Helter Skelter by Kyoko Okazaki
Super-model Ririko has been at the top of her game for what seems like an eternity, at least for the modelling world. And now with a new face rising up to challenge her position as the best, she is willing to alter her entire body to maintain her status, even if it means altering her sense of self in the process. Many consider Kyoko Okazaki, who was born on December 13, 1963, to be one of the moms of josei (women's) comics. Okazaki began her career in adult comics in the 1980s, and is known for her minimalist style and willingness to tackle challenging subjects. Okazaki made her debut in Cartoon Burikko, an experimental adult comic anthology aimed mostly at men, while she was a student at Atomi University. Okazaki's focus would eventually shift to women's issues. With a focus on modern young women's difficulties, Okazaki's narratives never shied away from street culture, high fashion, or drug usage.
She'd subsequently move on to her first long-running series, Tokyo Girls Bravo, which was a rare cartoon to be published in a fashion magazine. Okazaki has been out of the public eye since the turn of the century as she heals from a near-fatal automobile accident. Okazaki won the Japan Media Arts Award as well as the Osamu Tezuka Culture Award for her work on Helter Skelter, which was converted into a film in 2012 and is presently showing in the United States.
