High Sixties by Roger Hutchinson
This is an anecdotal and analytical, biographical and autobiographical account of the social revolution that swept through Britain and Europe in the decade now known nostalgically as th "Swinging Sixties". It spans the era from the recognition of the end of old colonialism (Harold Macmillan's famous "winds of change" blowing across Africa), the Lady Chatterley's Lover trial and the Profumo affair to the Old Bailey and the prosecution for obscenity of Oz magazine in the autumn of 1971. As author Roger Hutchinson writes, the Chatterley trial "Had as much resemblance to, say, the trail of Oz magazine 10 years later as did a medieval joust to the Battle of the Somme. This work chronicles the characters and events of a decade which spawned the "permissive society", "beautiful people", mods, rockers, women's libbers and a vibrant underground press. Hutchinson, Roger: - Roger Hutchinson is an award-winning author and journalist. After working as an editor in London, in 1977 he joined the West Highland Free Press in Skye. Since then he has published thirteen books, including Polly: the True Story Behind Whisky Galore. He is still attached to the WHFP as editorialist and columnist, and has written for BBC Radio, The Scotsman, The Guardian, The Herald and The Literary Review. His book The Soap Man (Birlinn 2003) was shortlisted for the Saltire Scottish Book of the Year (2004). Calum's Road has been a huge bestseller, shortlisted for the Ondaatje Prize (2007) with film rights sold.
