Although figures have been cut in the ground in many parts of the world, it is in England that hill carvings are most accepted as an art form. In this book, the author explores the myths and legends behind each of the figures, considering when they were carved and the possible reasons behind their creation. Maurice Askew was born in Worcestershire and graduated from the Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts. In 1958 he moved to New Zealand to establish a design section at University of Canterbury. He has produced films for Internal Affairs, designed stamps for the New Zealand Post Office and is a Fellow of the New Zealand Design Institute.
