Hits and Misses by Robert Toft

A popular music scholarship, analyzing the creative processes behind some very familiar hit singles from the 1960s. It examines a selection of songs and recordings through the lens of textual criticism and delineates the creative process as it unfolds from the initial conception of a song to the final mix presented on disc.
'In this fine book, Robert Toft guides you through a medley of craftsmanlike aesthetic moments..Will the book help you write a hit? Unlikely, but it may well help you understand why you keep missing.' -- Word Magazine
Robert Toft holds a PhD in Historical Musicology from King's College, University of London and has taught at universities in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and Canada. He took the lead role in developing the Popular Music Studies program at The University of Western Ontario, where he is currently Professor of Music.
