The Honourable Beast by John Dexter

The theatre director John Dexter was also an outspoken correspondent, a candid diarist and kept detailed production notebooks. From this material, O'Hara, Dexter's lifetime companion, reveals encounters with theatre and opera stars and behind-the-scenes conflicts at the National and the Met. Dexter directed such classics as "Equus", "Galileo", "Pygmalion", "Madame Butterfly" and "The Threepenny Opera".
John Dexter won the Tony Award as Best Director for Equus and M Butterfly. He headed New York's Metropolitan Opera House for seven years. He died in 1990.
