The Horrockses by Margaret Burscough
A truly fascinating saga of a great Preston and Lancashire family which is in turn a vivid portrayal of society at the time. An important book for all Prestonians and anyone interested in the cotton industry. All Prestonians know Horrockses. In their heyday, these giants of the cotton industry employed thousands, and were responsible in large part for the town's prosperity and incredible growth during the nineteenth century, and, indeed, for putting it on the world map. But well-known local author Margaret Burscough soon discovered that there was a further tale to be told: that of the Horrocks dynasty more generally. Her research, aided by descendants of the family the world over, revealed a truly fascinating saga which is in turn a vivid portrayal of society at the time.
Margaret Burscough was born and bred in Preston. She is a keen local historian with a wide knowledge of the city and its industrial past. Her other publications are The History of Lark Hill and Historic Fulwood and Cadley (with Carole Knight).
