Hotel Brasil by Frei Betto
A murder mystery set in a run-down family hotel in Rio de Janeiro. Rio is the perfect backdrop with its dictatorships, drug wars, child gangs and violent policing tactics. A witty, touching account of life at the edge of Brazilian society, dressed up as a thrilling murder investigation.Frei Betto is a Brazilian writer, political activist, liberation theologian, and Dominican friar who was born in 1944. In the 1970s, the military dictatorship imprisoned him for four years for smuggling people out of Brazil. Frei Betto is involved in Brazilian politics in addition to his work on eradicating hunger in Brazil. He was an advisor on jail policy and child hunger for President Lula da Silva's government. It's his debut novel, and it's a good one.
