How Progressivism Destroyed Venezuela by Elizabeth Rogliani

December 6, 1998. The Venezuelan people went to the polls, hopeful for change and a brighter future. Hugo Chávez Frias won, promising a return to the prosperity of Venezuela's golden era. But the reality that followed was far from the dream.

Over the next two decades, Venezuela transformed dramatically--politically, economically, and ideologically. Once one of Latin America's most stable democracies, it became a nation teetering on the brink of collapse. How did a country on the path to first-world status fall so far? Was it Chávez alone, his government, and his failed policies--or were the seeds of disaster planted long before his rise?

This book traces the pivotal events, policies, and attitudes that enabled Chávez's leadership to become entrenched, despite growing protests, hypocrisy, and failure. Readers will witness how a single vote reshaped a nation, and how rights once taken for granted were slowly eroded while most citizens remained asleep.

A concise, compelling exploration of Venezuela's rise, fall, and the lessons to be learned from a democracy's unraveling, this book is essential for anyone seeking to understand the forces behind one of Latin America's most dramatic transformations.

Rogliani, Elizabeth: - Elizabeth Rogliani, also known as Elizabeth Otaola, is an immigrant from Venezuela who grew up watching her country deteriorate through the eyes of her parents at a very young age, and all through her early teens. She grew up in Venezuela's capital city of Caracas, and made the decision to finish her high school abroad, always with the plan of returning home. In 2010, she moved to the United States, where she found herself ten years later, watching her old home from afar, recognizing it is not the place where she grew up. She studied Political Science and International Affairs in college, and in 2020, on an unexpected twist of fate, one of her videos warning Americans of a possible political decline went viral. Now she decided to share the story of her country's own decline with this book.
