Previously he has written biographies of Washington Gladden, Avicenna, Francis of Assisi, Berthold von Schenk and Raymond Lull as well as a number of textbooks. The Concordia Historical Institute recognized Fry's previous work on "Matthias Loy" with a "Citation" for outstanding scholarship. Fry is currently Professor of Church history and Theology at Winebrenner Theological Seminary at the University of Findlay. Joel R. Kurz received his B.A. in English from The College of the Ozarks and his M.Div from Concordia Theological Seminary. He has had essays and poetry published in several journals, in addition to collaborating with Dr. C. George Fry on two previous biographies by The Edwin Mellen Press.
