In 1995, he was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame as the honorary society's youngest member. He received the Oscar Causey Award for contributions to research from the National Reading Conference in 1996, and the Sylvia Scribner Award from the American Educational Research Association in 1997.
Stanovich is a Founding Member of the Society for the Scientific Study of Reading and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (Divisions 3 & 15), the American Psychological Society, and the International Academy for Research in Learning Disorders. He was a member of the National Research Council/National Academy of Sciences Committee on the Prevention of Reading Problems in Early Children. He has written or edited two prior books.
