Elle Andra-Warner was born in a castle while in a postwar Estonian displaced persons camp in Europe. She lived in England for a period before moving to Canada with her parents in the 1950s, settling in Port Arthur, Ontario (now part of the city of Thunder Bay). The noises and sights of Lake Freighters, such as the Edmund Fitzgerald, were a part of her childhood in Canada.
