The Human Figure in Motion by Eadweard Muybridge

The 4,789 photographs in this definitive selection show the human figure models almost all undraped engaged in over 160 different types of action: running, climbing stairs, etc.

Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904), a important figure in photographic history, was born in England but spent much of his adventurous life working as a photographer in the United States. He took panoramas of San Francisco and caught the natural majesty of Yosemite on big glass plates. He is best known for shooting and killing his wife's lover, but he made his name by solving problems with short-time exposure and utilizing its potential. Muybridge, the chronophotographer and forerunner of film, turned his subsequent studies of human and animal movement into his life's work.
