Imaging the Bible by Martin O'kane
The Bible is seen as not merely a book of doctrine but as the main source of inspiration of the arts in Western Europe. This book examines how 'reading' the Bible visually can help us appreciate the intricacies of the biblical narrative and shows how the stories of the Bible have been interpreted visually within specific traditions.
Dr Martin O'Kane is the director of the British Academy project Bible and Painting and of the Imaging the Bible in Wales project. He is the author of Painting the Text: The Bible and Visual Culture (Sheffield Phoenix Press, 2006).
