Hilary Davies was born in 1954 of Anglo-Welsh parents. She read French and German at Oxford, where she co-founded the literary magazine Argo. She won an Eric Gregory Award in 1983, first prize in the TLS/Cheltenham Festival Poetry Competition in 1987 and was a Hawthornden Fellow in 1992. From 1991 to 1993 she was Chairman of the Poetry Society. She is now Head of Modern Languages at St Paul's Girls' School..
