Der Ich-Erz hler stammt aus einer Familie des Pariser B rgertums, die den Sommer blicherweise bei Verwandten auf dem Land verbringt. Hier erlebt er eine gl ckliche Kindheit und lernt Personen kennen, die in seinem weiteren Leben eine Rolle spielen werden, etwa den Kunstliebhaber Swann, dessen Tochter Gilberte, oder die lokale Adelsfamilie, die Guermantes. Der Ich-Erz hler steigt in der Welt des Adels auf und besucht die Salons. Hier macht er sich ber das leere Geplauder der Menschen lustig, aber er ist auch fasziniert und kann sich nicht von ihnen trennen, um sein Werk zu schaffen. Die politischen Aff ren seiner Zeit interessieren ihn kaum. Er bekommt nur mit, dass die Dreyfus-Aff re es manchen Personen erlaubt, gesellschaftlich aufzusteigen, w hrend sie andere zum Abstieg zwingt. Marcel Proust (1871-1922) war ein franz sischer Schriftsteller und Kritiker. Prousts Hauptwerk ist Auf der Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit ( la recherche du temps perdu) in sieben B nden. Dieser monumentale Roman ist eines der bedeutendsten erz hlenden Werke des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Welt der Guermantes ist der dritte Teil dieses Werkes.

Marcel Proust was born in Auteuil in 1871. In his twenties he became a conspicuous society figure, frequenting the most fashionable Paris salons of the day. After 1889, however, his suffering from chronic asthma, the death of his parents and his growing disillustionment with humanity caused him to lead an increasingly retired life. He slept by day and worked by night, writing letters and devoting himself to the completion of A la recherche du temps perdu. He died in 1922 before publication of the last three volumes of his great life's work.
