Etienne Gilson was born in the city of Paris in the year 1884. In 1921, he was appointed Professor of Medieval Philosophy at the Sorbonne, and from 1932 until 1951, he held a similar position at the College of France. He was a member of the University of Toronto's Institute of Mediaeval Studies from 1929 until his death.
