The Inner Consultation by Roger Neighbour

The Inner Consultation, Second Edition sets out the authors thoughts on how consulting skills, and methods of teaching them, have evolved in the 17 years since the books first publication
"'The Inner Consultation has become one of the very few contemporary medical classicsThis remarkable book focuses very clearly on both parties in the medical consultation. It is now well accepted that the consultation is the epicentre of general practice. Quality consulting makes us more effective, and makes our task both more interesting and more worthwhile. I was deeply humbled when I re-read the book so that I could prepare these words. I had forgotten quite what an astonishing book this is - how beautifully written, how wise and incisive and witty and fun it is. If you have neverread this book, you are in for a treat.' David Haslam, Chairman, Royal College of General Practitioners" 'This self help manual is obligatory for all trainees and trainers in general practice and those whose consultation skills have devolved to little more than wing and prayer. It will, as the author states boldly, enable you to consult more skilfully, more intuitively and more efficiently.A"' BMJ

He worked for many years as a teacher and program director for the Watford Vocational Training Plan, as an MRCGP examiner for 20 years, and as Chief Examiner for the Royal College of General Practitioners from 1997 to 2002. He was elected President of the Royal College of General Practitioners for a three-year term in 2003. He received an OBE in 2011 for services to medical education.

Roger became captivated with the psychology of consultation and the doctor-patient relationship in general practice after studying experimental psychology rather than biochemistry as an undergraduate. His 'Inside' trilogy, The Inner Consultation (1987), The Inner Apprentice (1992), and The Inner Physician (2016), was inspired by this fascination. I'm Too Hot Now, a collection of his medical and philosophical articles, was released in 2005. Roger continues to publish, teach, and lecture on consulting skills and medical education in the UK and around the world now that he has retired from clinical practice.

He is a semi-professional violinist who enjoys spending time in Normandy, where he has a second home.
