Soaring through the galaxies is all Jennifer O'Hare has ever wanted to do. A skilled navigator with the Intergalactic Protection Fleet her career is set, until a devastating explosion destroys her ship, leaving her the only survivor. Forced out of her self-imposed seclusion to take a commission aboard the S Zenith, Jenn finds everything she once thought she'd lost forever to be just within her reach. If only the Captain wasn't such a nightmare.

Captain Mark Huxley is fighting his own demons. Dealing with the trauma of his past has made him increasingly obstinate and withdrawn. He doesn't want, or need, any new additions to rock his status quo, but Jenn soon proves to be a good fit for his crew. When his shell of hostile indifference finally cracks and he lets Jenn into his heart he finds himself willing to do anything to keep her safe; even if that includes sacrificing himself.
